We’re a few weeks into the spring season here in Minnesota, and after months spent inside, there’s nothing better than celebrating the coming warmth than on a patio or porch. So today, we’ve pulled together our favorite ways to refresh your patio for spring – because whether you have a three-season porch that just needs a few key tweaks, or you’re looking to completely revamp your space from furniture to firepit, everyone could use a fresh start this time of year.
PATIO FURNITURE
If you don’t have a patio set yet (or are looking to upgrade yours), there are a few key things to keep in mind while you’re shopping. The first is to make sure you’re getting furniture that fits the scale of your space. You don’t want a huge sofa if you only have a narrow balcony to work with or too-small furniture for a spacious back deck. The trick is to instead fill your space so it’s comfortable, but not too roomy or tight. Then, once you’ve got the space constraints down, consider what your functional needs are – are you looking for an ultra-relaxing space filled with cushy lounge furniture or a hammock? Or do you want something that offers plenty of seating options and side tables for guests whenever you entertain? Choosing the set that fits your lifestyle is the key to investing in furniture you absolutely love.

LIGHTING
Once you’ve got your furniture in place, then it’s time to set up your lighting. From lanterns and candles to café lighting, creating an ambience that’s both inviting and festive is a must have for your outdoor patio or porch. We always recommend going with a few different options, too – by layering your lighting, it helps to keep things feeling curated and gives your space a comfortable, lived-in, vibe.

PLANTS & GREENERY
Over the next few weeks, it’ll be the perfect time to start planting those shrubs and flowers, and we absolutely love incorporating landscaping on a patio or porch. And whether you’re using potted plants with climbing vines and colorful blooms, or you’re adding tabletop succulents to give your space a pop of personality, incorporating greenery helps to make your exterior instantly come alive. You simply can’t go wrong.

SEASONAL ACCESSORIES
Your patio or porch can and should transition seamlessly from spring to summer, but there’s no reason you can’t also add a few seasonal touches to emphasize each change. For spring, consider incorporating a few décor pieces (like throw pillows and tabletop décor) in pastel-inspired shades and floral patterns for a soft and elegant vibe, then once summer kicks in, swap them out for brighter and bolder hues and prints to reflect the vibrancy of the new season. As far as décor goes, we believe there’s never a limit to the celebrations.

THROWS & FIREPITS
Finally, your patio isn’t complete without a roaring firepit and a few cozy throws for guests to use. Especially while those temps are still dropping a bit overnight, there’s nothing more enjoyable than curling up outside with a crackling fire and welcoming in the new season. Plus, once those ultra-warm days hit, you’ll be all prepped and ready for s’mores. Not too shabby, if we do say so ourselves.
