Creating Bold Personality Splashes in a Neutral Color Palette

Updated: Jan 21, 2021

Love a neutral home, but not sure how to make it unique? This month, we’re talking all about interior style that manages to stay within a simple color palette while simultaneously striking a bold note. Because when it comes to neutral spaces, there’s nothing plain or boring about them. Read on for our top tips on how to incorporate personality into your home, and you’ll be the toast of the neighborhood in no time.

Add Plenty of Texture

The first step to making neutral spaces pop is to add plenty of texture. Remember - layering is everything. When you’re sticking to just a few colors (think greys, browns, and whites), there’s actually a ton of flexibility in the range of materials you can use. Get creative with layered throw pillows and blankets in interesting fabrics like velvet, fur, and satin. Or, opt for an area rug in a high pile shag or one that’s rattan-inspired for a boho-chic look. The mix of textures can work wonders to add depth and dimension to your space.

Play with Patterns

Similar to texture, a favorite method of ours for adding a dash of personality is to play with patterns in your design. Whether in terms of tile, fabrics, or artwork, there are a whole slew of options available for you to create drama and excitement, and you can do it in just a few color shades. Think about it – is there anything more gorgeous than a dazzling bathroom floor of simple, yet bold, graphic tiles in black and white? In our opinion, as long as the rest of the room feels pared down and simple, you can get as creative as you’d like – there’s no limit to how wild you can be.

Vary Warm & Cool Tones

It’s important to remember that while neutrals fall into one category, there are vast differences between shades and colors. A cool grey paint color, for example, gives a space a completely different vibe than a grey with a taupe influence. So, as you consider your room’s design, think about what type of aesthetic you’re going for. Would a warmer hue work best? Or do you need to keep things feeling cooler overall? Once you’ve got your base, be sure to mix in a few key pieces that reflect the opposite aesthetic. A space that has a touch of eclectic spirit always feels more curated and welcoming than something entirely monochromatic.

Don’t Forget About Metallics

Of course, we can’t forget about the power of metallics. As neutrals themselves, they can really help to keep your overall look cohesive and streamlined while adding instant pizazz and glam. Plus, they don’t have to be contained to hardware, plumbing, and light fixtures - adding décor pieces to your space can definitely up the shine factor, too. Everything from lamp bases to gilded mirrors and potted plants can make your room come alive with a pop of neutral magic that truly wows.

Neutrals have personality, no doubt, and there’s no reason why your home can’t showcase it. From layering texture to incorporating pops of metallics into your design, a neutral home is sure to be a space that’ll give you both calming and energetic vibes. And that, in our opinion, is a guaranteed success that will absolutely stand the test of time.
